First of all we should clear up a common misconception. A leak in a flat roof can lead to eventual collapse and tons of property damage if you re not careful. Unfortunately this is a fairly common problem in tucson. If you have attic access the easiest way to track down a leak is to go up there with a flashlight and look for the evidence.

Flat roofs aren t actually flat. They can be several feet above the leak or to the right or left of it. The drain is supposed to be lower than the rest of the roof not an inch higher. Penetrations can include plumbing and roof vents chimneys dormers or anything else that projects through the roof.

If a flat roof is properly designed it will typically have a very slight slope. However in my own experience the problems with leaking flat roofs are usually as a result of either poor workmanship installing the roof membrane poor maintenance by the building owner or as a result of age.
